Stories like swiss cheese
I was thinking this morning about the part of the story you don't get to read. Or at least the part of the story you have to search for.
For instance here in Maine there was a story about a Truck Driver who plowed into a Car on the highway, killing the driver of the car. He was put on trial and convict of vehicular manslaughter or something like that. But the point is that, he had like 34 traffic violations. According to the law, this guy shouldn't have been able to have a licence, he certainly shouldn't have been able to drive truck. Well, this story was huge, it happened last summer, and I believe the most recent story about him in Maine papers was barely a month ago. This guy even inspired Legislation that is alot tougher on repeat offenders (something I don't exactly agree with but thats for another blog). But out of all these months of news, not once did any one mention anything about the company that hired him. Why is there no accountability on the part of the buisnesses that encourage these people to go out onto the roads. Its just drivers falling asleep at the wheel, News media was eager to point the finger at drivers, but not at an industry that puts speed and efficiencey over the lives of drivers that must contend with this trucks, and the drivers who have to weigh their ability to drive with wage.
This stream of consciousness leads to Jack Abramoff. Now we all love political coruption. As a society, we can't get enough of our Watergates, and Monaca Lewinsky's and now we have a juicey one about he Congress to gawk at, and perfectly sleazy looking criminal to focus all of our frustrations with the political process at. And of course he is guilty, what he did is inexcusable, but he's just one man, he's just a lobbyist. Behind his fedora and the millions of dollars worth of gifts, is a source of the money for these gifts. Who is Abramoff lobbying for, and why does this not make front pages. Why are we a culture that is so willing to expose our politicians while we protect the buisnessmen that profit off of these crimes?
