Is war not supposed to end?
At what point does one genuinely get to say, "I support my troops." Recently there was a protest, I believe in Waterville, Me, by the right-wing "Support Your Troops" camp. The consensus as reported by local media, was that these people were fed up with people calling for the troops to come home, and that by debating an exit strategy the democrats in congress and the left as a whole, are unpatriotic, unamerican, and don't get to say that they support their troops. One person stated that the time to protest is before a war, and that during the war all should come together to support, not just the "troops" in the very abstract sence of which this term has been used by both sides, but their mission. Now I am tired of the crap from this side of the arguement, they have become so antagonistic, that at this point they are leaning toward the militaristic. It's no longer a matter of supporting troops--which I never believed was true my self--its finally coming out that these people, truely and honestly love war. The President and his allies in his cabinet might not have the gusto to come right out and say it, but his constituents on the ground are, they love war.
And so I feel we should just throw out the baby, no one gives a shit about the troops, no cares whether they live our die, and the debate isn't about them. To shift the debate too the troops is a tool of propaganda, to turn the focus off of the administration, whose only answers about the possible end of the war is that those who propose pulling the troops out have a responcibility to come out with a viable alternative. I agree that we should be coming up with ideas, but I am not a millitary analyst, and my job isn't commander in chief, if the American people want the troops out, which eventually all americans will want, then he needs to come up with ideas.
So in the end I say fuck the troops, yes I care about them, yes I see them as human, yes they are fellow citizens, but this isn't nor should it be a debate over them. But I have one comment to the "Support the Troopers," if it is unpatriotic to discuss pulling the troops out, then is war never supposed to end? and what are the consiquences of never ending war?
